Community Liaison

Barton

In June 2010, Salford City Council approved Nexen Exploration UK Ltd’s planning application to explore for and extract Coal Bed Methane (CBM) at the Barton site in Irlam.

The site is located immediately east of the M62 and north of Barton Moss Road, Salford. The site covers an area approximately the size of a football pitch. The land to the north of the site (east of the motorway) comprises improved grassland; the land to the south and east of the site is arable farmland.  Approximately 250m to the south lies the boundary of City Airport (Barton Aerodrome), with the A57 (Liverpool Road) and the Manchester Ship Canal beyond. The location maps below indicate the location of the Barton site and the red line highlights the boundary of the site.

Since the application was approved, IGas Energy Plc (IGas) completed the acquisition of Nexen Exploration UK Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Nexen Inc, on the 9th March 2011. The result of this transaction is that IGas Energy will become the operator and sole owner of the petroleum and exploration licence previously held by Nexen, including the Barton site.

IGas Energy has been in partnership with Nexen for a number of years on the licences and the change of control has been approved by the Department of Energy of Climate Change. There will be no material changes as a consequence of this acquisition and the nature of the planned operation at Barton.

Community Liaison Group

As part an ongoing commitment to community engagement and participation, a Community Liaison Group (CLG) will be established. The CLG is intended to provide two-way dialogue between community members interested in the development and IGas Energy. It will enable IGas Energy to provide the community with progress updates on the construction and operation of the site and address any issues regarding site activity. In turn, the community representatives will be able to feedback IGas Energy’s responses to the wider community.
